Are you a new freelance writer trying to land clients?
Are you terrified of sending cold pitch emails?
I hear you, but fear not!
You’re likely struggling because you don’t know what to include in the email, so here are a few tips to help you get started:
1. WRITE AN IRRESISTIBLE SUBJECT LINE: Ask a question, make a bold statement, or offer content ideas. Your goal here is to get them to open the email.
I once had a prospective client respond to an email that had ended up in his junk folder because my subject line piqued his interest. 😎
(Comment below if you want to hear the line.)
2. PERSONALISE: Create pitch templates, but be sure to personalise them to the client and industry you are pitching to. Show that you’ve done your research and you have a clear idea of how you can be of service.
3. KISS: Keep it super short.
4. OFFER REAL VALUE: Don’t give too much away, but give them a taste of what they can expect with real value. This could be a content idea, a tip on how to optimise their newsletter, etc.
5. PRESENT YOUR BENEFIT: In as few words as possible, state how you can help them solve a problem.
6. CALL TO ACTION: Make it clear what they should do if they’re interested, i.e. reply to email to arrange a call to learn more about the services you offer.
7. FOLLOW UP: Maybe they missed your first email, maybe they were busy and forgot to respond, maybe they didn’t need your service 2 weeks ago, but now they do.
Follow up to ensure that you stay on their mind.
8. REPEAT: Continue pitching, following the above steps until you no longer need to pitch because you are flooded with referrals and inbound leads. 🎉
I know how daunting cold pitching can be when you’re just starting out, but the more you do it, the easier it gets.
There’s no guarantee that every pitch will get a response, but this is a good launching point if this is the route you choose to take.
Let me know if you found any of these tips helpful!
